hermione’s sweater

So, have you seen the latest Harry Potter? I promise, no spoilers here, just some knitting talk. I saw it this evening, and I am now inspired to knit my own version of Hermione’s Icelandic sweater. I’d seen this style of sweater before, of course, but something about the white background made me look at this kind of sweater in a new way. The gauge is small, and I’m already thinking about looking for yarn. I feel certain it’d be wrong to save the photos I’ve found online and post them here, so instead I’ll make you click. So far, the only images of the sweater I can find show it under a jacket, but we’ve got the long shot (featuring Ron and Harry), where the little detail along the bottom edge is visible, and a close-up where the neck pattern is more clear. I love it! I’m getting out the graph paper immediately!

Other knitting delectables came to light–Umbridge’s costuming is perfect, with lots of knitted gear, including a lacy cardigan; even her pink-on-pink knit herringbone dress with matching coat had me thinking about knitting! Ginny wears a totally cool crocheted vest, and Luna Lovegood has a cute crocheted cardigan. Not to mention, of course, Weasley sweaters and scarves.

As for the movie, it was fine. They had to condense a lot of book to make even a long movie, and I understand that things had to be tweaked, but I felt they skipped some important character development. The score is ludicrous, and kept us laughing the entire time. So in that way, totally enjoyable!

Edited to add: A glaring omission that only just occurred to me–they dropped Hermione knitting hats and socks for house elves!

I was totally into the knitting content myself! In fact, the reason I am online right now is to try to find a picture of Neville’s raglan stranded sweater! No success for me yet, but I’ll be following your progress.

That is a pretty sweater! Given the hype the other HP knits have gotten, I’d have to think the costumers might be aware that their knits will be getting a critical eye :)

I loved that sweater as well!! :) I also liked her hoodie type thing she wore a couple of times.

I agree with you on the movie – but then I’m always disappointed the first time I see the HP films

There was a distracting amount of enviable knitwear in that movie. I liked Hermione’s striped hoodie, too.

I absolutely agree about the score, though that was the only thing I strongly disliked.

I loved the little yoked pulli too. Very cute, and something like that would look great on you, E! I loved Ginny’s crocheted vest in the Christmas scenes.

This was my least favorite of the books, so I thought that the movie was pretty good considering…

I’ve had the Equinox Yoked Pullover from (I think) Fall ’06 IK on my mind lately. I never considered making the body white, but that sweater is gorgeous. Consider checking out the charts on that one if you get stuck.

Yeah, I’m totally sad about all the missing knitting. And I think they downplayed the pranks on Umbridge too much.

But there were some really nice knits in that movie. I liked Luna’s purple cardi-thing.

That’s a gorgeous fair isle. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

With your dark hair that coloring will look great!

I am so glad you mentioned Ginny’s vest! That’s the Order of the Phoenix knit that stuck out in my mind. I also admired Hermione’s fair-isle sweater, but I thought it was cream, brown and pink. Different people see things differently! Good luck patterning – you’re a braver woman than I!

I’m really, really glad I’m not the only one who couldn’t stop thinking about Emma Watson’s wardrobe throughout the movie! I love all of my fellow fiber-folk!

Now I have to go see the movie just for the knitting. I normally wait until the DVD comes out. But I guess I will have to spend the money. Of course, I will have to find a sock pattern I can knit in the dark to take with me….

Okay, so I only saw it once and was a little out of it, but…

Didn’t Ginny have a totally kicking hoodie? I mean, I remember thinking before (from pictures) that Hermione’s sweater rocked, but during the movie I totally switched knitting dreams over to Ginny…
