next on the needles

The Sunrise Circle Jacket—I’m also participating in the knitalong. I saw this jacket online (it’s the free one from Interweave Knits this issue) and immediately thought of my mom. The interesting construction has yielded positive comments from my boyfriend as well as the coworkers I’ve shown it to. I went with Knit Picks’s Wool of the Andes in Fern. The yarn arrived last week.

I didn’t think I had the right size needles for it, but turns out I did, so I started it yesterday. Here’s my current progress:

Damn if size 7 needles and worsted weight yarn doesn’t knit up crazy, crazy fast! Instead of leaving the cuff to be sewn on later, I knit it up as I was going, becuase as we know, I hate sewing. I’m currently at an impasse, in that my stitch count is off by 1 stitch, but I swear I did everything right. I think the screwup was just a row ago or so, but I’m not in the mood to figure it out, I don’t think. Not right now.

I’m just a little concerned about the jacket as a whole—the pattern designer came to the KAL to, I don’t know, warn us, I guess, that the model for the picture was super skinny and the coat wouldn’t hang the way it looks in the picture. That’s a HUGE bummer; the photo she included of a friend wearing it looks not nearly so elegant. But she does say that the friend should have been wearing a size smaller. I don’t know how this helps, actually–if the model was super skinny and wearing the same exact sweater, how does it look awesome on her but look way way way too big on someone who is supposedly normal sized? Confused. But my mom is very petite, and I’m making the smallest size anyway. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, and I’ll chalk it up to a photograph inaccurately capturing the look of a piece, and since it’s Wool of the Andes, I only spent $18 dollars on it. But this will most definitely be a needling worry as I work on it.

Are you getting row gauge, too? I’m curious because I, too, fell in love with this pattern but don’t feel like shelling out the big bucks for the suggested yarn. I saw that message from Kate about sizing as well and it didn’t really help! Please keep us posted about your progress. I imagine this sweater is on my wish lists at the moment. I love the color you chose, by the way!

Holy crap, what did she mean? I am totally confused. I like the way the jacket is a little longer on her friend, but I also agree that it looks a little too roomy around the bust and waist. But on the tall and skinny model, I think the jacket looks too short. Though I like the way the sleeves look on the model. Arrrgggh! I bought some Cascade 220 for this, and then I found some Patons Classic Merino in a nice color for a good price, so I bought that too. Either way, not a huge investment, and it will all end up as a sweater someday.

    Please share the wealth!

“Discovered” the Sunrise Circle Jacket in the Fall 2008 Interweave Knits article about Kate Gilbert. I found an exciting yarn for the project and tried to obtain the pattern. Two weeks ago I found the patern available for sale (downloadable PDF) from Interweave Press. But when I saw how much they were charging I raced down to an area library – only to discover that the directions to the pattern never appeared in the mag and were only available (two years ago) upon request (SASE). So, I resigned myself to paying the $5.50 and doing the download. But alas, it seems that in the interim (2 weeks) Interweave has pulled the pattern and offered no response to my request for an explanation. After all this, I’ve thought twice about subscribing to Interweave. It was bad enough that they featured the pattern but didn’t print it in the original issue that it was featured in. But to then re-feature it again last Fall which they knew would only build up demand again for the pattern and to not be prepared to address requests for the pattern seems inexcusable.

It’s a great design and I appreciate you sharing the benefit of your wisdom – having knitted some three of the jackets. Won’t you please share the Sunrise Circle Jacket PDF with a desperate knitter?
