mixtape’s quilt

mixtape-quilt

When you’re trying to pick a name for your unborn child, it’s always recommended to suggest a few “out-there” options. Throw people off the scent of your actual top name choices, you know? But did our friends realize that “Mixtape” was going to stick? It did, so this quilt, designed especially for the baby, has been named in its honor.

infinite variety

True brilliance is fleeting, it turns out, because the Infinite Variety quilt exhibit, featuring the collection of Joanna Rose, was on display here in New York city for only six days. It was phenomenal, and I hope that she, and the American Folk Art Museum can work out getting it on display elsewhere. But for now, let me show you some of the many, many pictures that I took of the display…

i made a quilt!!

my first quilt

Though I’ve neglected to blog much about my recent forays into sewing, I have been sewing a lot in the last year, getting more confident and more skilled with every block. But I’d yet to ever complete an actual quilt, and I knew that until that happened, I wouldn’t have any credence with actual quilters. I was just a “piecer,” not a “quilter.” I changed that in the past week.

That’s right, I made my very first quilt in one week (from first cut to the binding—the planning had occurred ahead of time). Why the rush, you ask? Well, because I’d been scared to start, and then I decided I had to just DO IT, all in time for my cousin’s bridal shower …

a jeans jean skirt!

i made a skirt!

When my favorite pair of jeans developed a hole in the crotch, I wore them up until the size reached—why am I admitting this online?—a truly embarrassing level. I told myself it was in an invisible spot, I rationalized that I wore them only around the neighborhood. . . .  But then one day I came to terms with the trashy situation and tucked them in the back of my drawer. I knew there was a technique for sewing a jean skirt out of old jeans, and I knew someday I’d have the energy to do it.

Yesterday I did a closet purge and came upon my much-loved jeans. These jeans went everywhere with me for a few years, and no matter what I weighed or how much I ate at one sitting, they always fit right. They were magic. I decided it was time to get them back in my wardrobe.
